Silent Spring: Deadly Autumn of the Vietnam War
Shortly after I had returned home from Vietnam for the last time, my father urged me to file a disability claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) for medical problems I had experienced during my service. I began the process without much enthusiasm and quickly got sidelined by my new civilian life. Little did I realize that I wouldn’t re-visit my disability claims again until almost forty years later when I watched President Barack Obama give a speech on the horrors of the Vietnam War.
I’m still not quite sure what happened that day, but after listening to the president, I committed myself to investigate the causal link between my tactical pesticide exposures and the myriad health problems plaguing my life and the lives of many other Vietnam veterans. My post-service medical problems began mildly enough but soon ballooned and were followed by more serious health issues. Every time I would ask one of my doctors what was causing my illness, I would usually get the answer, “I don’t know, but—.”
When I began my research in 2012, I would learn that Agent Orange, along with several other military pesticides, were all very capable of impacting every biological system in my body and could actually be linked to many wide-ranging ailments for which many of my doctors could only say they weren’t sure of the cause. Despite the uniqueness of Vietnam veterans and the incredibly diverse range of hazardous chemicals to which we were exposed. $3.99 on Kindle.

The Pharaoh’s Treasure
A new perspective on the history of paper from its origins in Egypt to its spread throughout the Western world, The Pharaoh’s Treasure relates the story of how papyrus paper lent itself to the task of producing scrolls, books and Bibles, and in doing so, helped revolutionize the world. It was with the advent of papyrus paper that the ability to record and transmit information exploded, allowing for an exchanging of ideas from the banks of the Nile throughout the Mediterranean and the civilized world for the first time in human history. Once people got used to being able to record and transmit information so easily, the medium might change, parchment or pulp paper might come or go, but this habit and expectation of writing things down became a hallmark of civilized life. In other words, we are what we are not in spite of this paper, but because of it. $14.99 on Kindle.

The Science of Self Talk
Talking to ourselves – and learning to listen
We all speak to ourselves on a daily basis. Whether it’s out loud or an internal (or infernal) commentary, we all practice self-talk and, how we speak to ourselves can have a significant effect on our emotions and subsequent actions.
Some people’s self-talk is mostly about the future while, for others, it’s an internal dialogue about the past. Some self-talk is positive and upbeat, while other self-talk is harsh, critical or defeatist.
Self-talk can focus on other people but, more often than not, it is about ourselves – and is often negative.
If you listen carefully, you’ll notice that your inner conversation reflects thoughts and emotions. Self-talk isn’t random. It exhibits patterns that repeat themselves. And everyone has their own characteristic self-talk that is uniquely theirs.
In The Science Of Self-Talk mindfulness expert, Ian Tuhovsky explains how we can re-write the script when it comes to our internal communication. Through a series of simple exercises for use in daily life, you can understand your own self-talk in order to change the conversation.
Learn how you can listen to and understand your internal dialogue in order to change it.
Many of us practice negative self-talk by default – how many times have you called yourself an idiot or chastised yourself for not being good enough?
Negative self-talk is a harmful habit which can lead to anxiety, depression, and helplessness and, yet, this is something that most of us do on a regular basis. For many people, this is learned behavior whereby caution against boasting leads to self-criticism or self-deprecation. For others, this is a natural reflection of the self and one that can slowly corrode self-esteem. $0.99 on Kindle.

Sayings To Live Your Life By
Sayings to Live Your Life By is an examination of the odd world of the metaphor and its various counterparts for curious readers with a knack for linguistics. What are the raw meanings behind these sayings? How did they originate? How have they become a part of common speech? These questions are addressed for the commonly used phrases collected here.
Gregg Arthur Southgate breaks down selected examples in an effort to find their meaning and purpose. While often nonsensical on the surface, metaphorical statements are used to help analyze difficult situations, provide a degree of simplicity in challenging decisions, and allow communication of events and circumstances. Their connection to intangible and complicated subjects such as philosophy and morality is vital, offering a way to put the indescribable into words. $0.99 on Kindle.
