They Hang Me in Tokyo: A Barbarian Artist’s Life-Changing Journey to Master Nihonga, the Traditional Art of Japan

Enter the hidden world of Nihonga art in this one-of-a-kind memoir blending West and East.

Hidden deep in the heart of Tokyo, a small shop sells something hardly known to the outside world. A coveted permanent pigment infused with minerals and gemstones, this rare paint has been used for centuries by Nihonga masters and few others. Nihonga, a living tradition of Japanese painting known for its blend of naturalism and abstraction, fine, delicate lines, and ethereal beauty, is a world wrapped in mysticism, inaccessible even to most Japanese people.

For American artist Allan West, finding the permanent pigments to use for his burgeoning art career became an obsession. Against all advice, Allan moved to Japan to seek out the hidden world of Nihonga and unlock its secrets and profound beauty. His quest took him from Carnegie Mellon and the safety of his Western roots to the bustling streets of Tokyo to learn from the masters. Driven by an unwavering commitment to his passion as an artist, West was not prepared for the challenges of being a barbarian in a culture steeped in tradition and formality.

Blending culture clash, determination in the face of obstacles, and triumph over what’s never been done, They Hang Me in Tokyo is the amazing true story of Japanese customs, art secrets, and a foreigner’s relentless quest to belong. When West rejected modernism to study with one of the five reigning “mountains” of traditional Japanese painting, he took on a transformative journey of struggle and acceptance spanning continents and gaining him worldwide recognition.

They Hang Me in Tokyo is a vivid tapestry of contrasting cultures that shows the boundless creative possibilities when passion meets perseverance. Enter the mesmerizing world of Nihonga in this captivating memoir of acceptance. $0.99 on Kindle.

Southpaw

Dennis Gilfeather, Southpaw

There seemed to be a huge gaping hole inside of me. I wanted some answers but didn’t know where to look. I felt like there was a huge worldwide conspiracy afoot to keep me in a state of utter confusion, making me so numb that I had no choice but to give up and let the experts get on with it. What a wonderful thing democracy is. You can say what you want as long as you do as you’re told. It all seemed so superficial, so inadequate. Where would it all lead? Lying in some hospital bed in thirty years’ time, dying of some ‘disease of civilization’; up to my neck in debt, alcoholism, depression, loneliness and insanity. There had to be more to life than this.I am talking about liberation here. Freedom from the bondage of self. Freedom from our blinkered, prejudiced, opinionated thoughts. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got. The more stoned I got, the more abstract yet somehow meaningful it all became. We were one and the same. I was he. He was me. That bald little Chinese monk on TV was beckoning me to follow the path, the way of the warrior, the way of the Grasshopper. The monk was right; change was the natural way of the universe. Things were not always as they appeared to be. A young Scottish boxer breaks away from the shackles of his environment, only to find himself mixed up with heroin smuggling in Asia. A story of violence, prison, fear and desperation, which leads to inner reflection and finally redemption. $9.99 on Kindle.

May the sacred cuts of life deepen you.

May your broken places serve.

For most of us, forgiveness is a long-haul healing process. Its not cheap and easy. And it ain’t for softies. Its a toe-to-toe heavyweight boxing match with a seemingly impenetrable opponent. Its brutal blows and endless rounds. Hits that land us face down on the mat. Like everyone, Ive taken hits. I almost didn’t get back up.

-from the Prelude

Like all human beings, you have encountered many pitfalls in your life’s journey.

Some may seem so deep that you think you cant make your way out of them but you can, every single time.

Forgiveness is the way out.

Loss. Betrayal. Violence. Injustice.

Eventually, everything breaks.

Part memoir, part exploration of the worlds great wisdom traditions, Broken Places is about living beyond the cracks. It traces the turbulent process of forgiveness from first strike to repair, reconciliation, and, ultimately, renewal. Healing is a hero’s journey.

De Rossis candid narrative is a road map for anyone who has fallen prey to emotional devastation, who now struggles to get back up, find balance, and live without regrets. In every moment, there is a choice: inner peace or inner turmoil. With genuine insight, a new story emerges a crucible for growth. Our resurrections become flickers of hope for others lost in the darkness.

Forgiveness is the bridge to transformation. To happiness. And to each other.
